Here at Durham Hotel we aim to provide the best selection of hotels for you to choose from for your stay in the beautiful North East city of Durham. With such a wide range of hotels to choose from you need look no further than our fantastic array here at Durham Hotel.

The city of Durham is best known perhaps for its towering Norman Cathedral, and its 11th century castle. The city itself can actually be dated to AD 995, although archaeological evidence has suggested a history of a settlement in the area of around 2000BC! Local legend has it however, that the city was founded in AD 995 by divine intervention, finding the Hill on which the Cathedral now stands as the final resting place for Saint Cuthbert. It was for this reason that the city found a spiritual prominence in its medieval history.

During your time in Durham, you will be glad to get back to your cosy bed in your Durham Hotel as the city is very hilly, having been claimed to be built upon the symbolic seven hills. The most central, and of course the most prominent of these hills hosts the Cathedral, which dominates the Durham skyline.

The Cathedral standing today was built in AD 1093 and is highly regarded as one of the finest examples in the modern world of Norman Architecture. The Cathedral has also been established as a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you have not yet been to visit the Cathedral, you may already have seen it in the Harry Potter films as 'Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry' however a spire was added to the top of the famous towers in the post production of the filming.

Durham Castle also holds a prominent place in the city having been built in the 11th Century as a strong projection of the Norman Power in the North of England. The Castle is also a fine example of Norman architecture; however it is also a great example of the early motte, and the bailey, castles that were favoured by the Normans.

The University of Durham, or most commonly known as Durham University was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1832, and was granted a Royal Charter in 1837. The university was one of the first to open in England in more than 600 years, and it claims to be England's 3rd oldest University after Oxford and Cambridge.

Today however the city is bustling, being so steeped in rich history you will never be short of something to see or do. Durham is only 13 miles from Sunderland which is a fantastic day trip if you are staying for a longer period of time in the city. The market place of Durham still hosts a regular market; however a permanent indoor market is also a feature of the city being situated just off The Market Place.

You will have no problem in travelling to your Durham Hotel as the city is situated prominently on the East Coast mainline train service. Rail travellers that journey from the South enter the city over a magnificent Victorian viaduct, high over the city. Newcastle airport and Durham Tees Valley airport are both only around 25 miles away from the city. If you are driving to the town, a park and ride service is also available.

No trip is complete, however, without a fantastic breakfast from your Durham hotel. Be sure to get started in the best possible way with a full English breakfast, or perhaps get stocked up on fresh fruit, yoghurt and cereals.

However you decide to spend your break away, we are sure you'll have a lovely trip when booking with Durham Hotels.
